How to Configure Lotus Notes for Gmail Access
I've recently begun a bit more off-site travel and have decided to take VIC with me on my laptop. My email provider has changed their security so that they only accept connections from the range of IP addresses that they serve. How do I work around this?Simple: set up a Gmail account (if you need an invitation, contact me). Now, you can continue to use your existing email address for your incoming (pop3) mail or you can use the gmail address. For outgoing mail, though, use Gmail's SMTP server. Simple in theory and in fact; however, there aren't any instructions on the Gmail site to tell you how to do this. They tell you how to configure just about everything there is except Notes. Here's how to set it up in Notes 6.5:
1. Go to your Personal Address book, then from the menu select View, then Advanced, then Accounts.
2. Edit your Outgoing Internet Mail document. It's the one where the protocol is SMTP.
3. On the Basics tab, use the following settings:
Account name: Anything you like. Mine is "Outgoing Internet Mail"4. On the Advanced tab, use the following settings:
Account server name: smtp.gmail.com
Login name: yourAccountName@gmail.com
Password: your Gmail password
Protocol: SMTP
SSL: Enabled
Only from location(s): Anything you like. I've enabled mine for * (all locations)
Port number: 465
Accept SSL site certificates: Yes
Accept expired SSL certificate: Yes
Send SSL certificates when asked: No
Verify account server name with remote server's certificate: Disabled
SSL protocol version: Version 3.0 with 2.0 handshake
Now, you shouldn't have to change your incoming mail server unless you just want to use the Gmail account. Then again, you may want to set up a second account for Gmail so you can pull it into one location (I do it the other way 'round and tell Gmail to forward all of my mail to my normal account). For completeness, here's how to set up POP access (for incoming mail) to the Gmail server:
1. Go to your Personal Address book, then from the menu select View, then Advanced, then Accounts.
2. Edit your Incoming Internet Mail document. It's the one where the protocol is POP. If this is an additional mail account you can create a new document.
3. On the Basics tab, use the following settings:
Account name: Anything you like. Mine is "Incoming Internet Mail"4. On the Protocol Configuration tab, use the following settings:
Account server name: pop.gmail.com
Login name: yourAccountName@gmail.com
Password: your Gmail password
Protocol: POP
SSL: Enabled
Only from location(s): Anything you like. I've enabled mine for * (all locations)
Leave mail on server: No5. On the Advanced tab, use the following settings:
Port number: 995And there you go. You should now be able to send and receive Internet mail from any location without having to jump through hoops.
Accept SSL site certificates: Yes
Accept expired SSL certificate: Yes
Send SSL certificates when asked: No
Verify account server name with remote server's certificate: Disabled
SSL protocol version: Version 3.0 with 2.0 handshake

I am still unable to send and recieve gmail emails from Lotus Notes....Is there any other setting which I need to make. I get an error "Configuration settings for the servereither missing or invalid" in the replication window. Please help
I too have followed your excellent instructions to the letter and have had no success.
The send outgoing internet mail in Replicator has not sent, even though there is a mail in the Outgoing Mail box (no errors marked). In Replicator, the receive internet mail status is POP3 Protocol Error Returned.
Any further insight on this one ?
Thanks
I don't know what to say guys. I've tried this again on several versions of Notes, including the R6.5 and the Notes 8 beta, and I just can't make it fail. Make sure you're following the instructions exactly.
Pay particular attention to the port numbers on the Advanced tab, and make sure you enter your entire gmail email address (john.doe@gmail.com) in the Login Name field for the SMTP account.
Also, to successfully send mail, try editing your current location document and in the Mail tab set "Send outgoing mail" to "directly to Internet". (Prem, I suspect this is your problem.)
good day all, adding this post, dont forget to look at your certificates in security section. i had to accept all of them to be able to send and recieve gmail. you may want to check that out as well.
I can't get it working either...
I set up everything exactly like that, but without success.
Receiving mails works, but I can't send anything.
Anyone any further idea?
Thanks,
FELIX
Hi to all
Am from Croatia fyi, and my gmail on Lotus Notes 8 beta 3 is fully operational.
Instructions are perfect.
Tks
Hi All,

Thanks Dave.

Qucik note to say your steps worked for me using Notes v 7.0.2
Thanks for tips.
Don't understand why Gmail don't put these instructions on their site. 100 million+ users can't be wrong.......
I have configured in the above mentioned manner, but I am getting the following error message while replication.
The remote server is not a known TCP/IP host - for internet address.
eprince, make sure you have access to the two gmail addresses listed. I can't imagine why someone would block them, but I supposed it's possible.
Try pinging pop.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com. If those come back with a message that they can't be resolved. then try pinging these addresses directly:
209.85.133.109
209.85.133.111
If that DOES work, then look into using another DNS server. I use OpenDNS (208.67.222.222) as my DNS server to prevent blocking of perfectly good addresses by my ISP.
If you're allergic to open systems, then follow the instructions again using 209.85.133.109 in place of pop.gmail.com and 209.85.133.111 in place of smtp.gmail.com.
If pinging the numers directly does NOT work, then you have a network problem that I can't solve in a blog comment. Contact your ISP and tell him you can't ping those addresses and find out why they're unavailable.
Keep in mind that you also need to make sure the indicated ports (465 and 995) aren't blocked by your firewall.
i got it all to work but i cant get my contacts downloaded...tips?
I followed the instruction n was able to send mail. When i try to replicate i get the error "Replicator error, POP3 protocol error returned, Replicating database". Please help.
Thanking you in anticipation.
The settings are correct. Thanks so much for sharing this. But I needed more tweaking in order for this to work on my Lotus Notes 6.5.5 client.
I followed your instructions to the dot, but then some items are missing in the location document so I ran the client configuration wizard. After seeing it did not do anything relevant, I went into the location document and woop... the replication was disabled...
So I enabled POP in Gmail, ran the replication again and walah!!! It worked....
Thanks again!
Perfect!
Many thanks: Peter from Hungary
Works better than fabulon.
Good work, only guide I've found.
Del.icio.us time. :-p
Thanks for ur precise indtructions ,. COuld any one guide me how to replicate to my inbox or to new database. My notes is alreday connected to domino server.
I followed the instruction on version 8, now i can send email through Gmail but not able to recieve.
the error is " error returned from remote access dialer"
please advise, thanks
Bayati, I've not seen the error you're talking about before, but I've got a couple of ideas...
It sounds like you're trying to connect via dial-up and the problem lies in Windows' remote access services. Possibly you've enabled this account for a dial-up location but you're not dialed in.
Also, check your firewall rules for port 995. This sounds a bit like an RAS error involving a blocked or "in use" port.
I had problems for some time and gave up - today i decided to give it a final try and found your blog.
And now it works!!
thx
Hi,
Thanks Dave,
It worked perfectly with my Lotus Notes 7, however there is one more question. When i choose to receive the mails manually they don't show up in my inbox until i change to a different folder although they are there under replications?
Thanks, Hennessy
Hennessy, that's probably just because you need to refresh the Inbox. Pressing F9 will do it, or clicking on the little blank space at the upper left corner of the Inbox.
Hi All, I use Notes 8 Client to send/recieve my google emails and I would like to change my Username. It's currently set as Joe Bloggs/Joe Bloggs. I would like to change it to read something like Joe Bloggs/London/Home or similar. You can see this when you forward a mail in your inbox and it comes up forwarded by Joe Bloggs/Joe Bloggs etc etc. Can anyone assist? Thanks

PLEASE HELP @ THIS
Rajive & Vishal, go to your settings in Gmail and and enable POP on your account. Make sure the port is 995 (not -995). Also, look at Anonymous' suggestion about your account name.
Remember that Notes is only half of the solution. Your Gmail account settings must be correct as well, and there are instructions on Gmail.com for that.
Hello friends,
I am able to send and receive the mails from the ln client to and from internet.
Basically the issue was with the mail settings for pop I did not get it enabled in gmail :P
But a new issue is here now.
Whenever I am sending the mail it is going to a default mail.box location and not going to the selected smtp.box where i am able to send the mails
basically the mail router keeps it in mail.box and shows error on replication as Unable to find path to the server.
Please help me about this.
Vishal, go back and review your SMTP connection document. The instructions are at the top of this page. Make sure it's enabled for the location you're using.
I'm quiet new to LoNo. But excited to use it for accessing Gmail. I have a copy of LoNo 7.0.2; where I followed all of your instructions to setup Gmail account. But I'm not able to go through. The mail bookmark gives an error "cannot be opened due to error, 'File does not exists'". The same is happening with Inbox button on Welcome screen. Request you to guide me in detail.
Chandrashekhar, I think you need to review my instructions from the beginning.
The instructions are NOT for accessing the Gmail interface from inside the Notes client. You can just use a web browser for that. The instructions ARE for using Gmail as the POP3 server for incoming mail and the SMTP server for outgoing mail for a Notes mail database that exists in Lotus Notes. To do that you would edit the connection documents in your personal address book as I described and continue to use your Notes mail client.
Your Notes client should have been set up for mail during the installation... my instructions would have nothing at all to do with any bookmark errors.
Alright folks,
For those who have LN client as per instructions above but still cannot receive e-mails (no errors, just no mails in inbox even when refreshed):
Open up your web-based gmail account, if POP forwarding is enabled - disable it and enable back.
Replicate again. Should work, worked on my laptop.
Dear All,
Its perfectly working.....
please tell how to download gmail contacts in lotus? Is it possible?
please suggest...
Perfect description!!
You saved my life.
Regards from Malaga
Dave, thanks for your advice. Now I'm able to send emails from LN, but still have problems with incoming mail. When I replicate , I have the following error:
"Replicator error,SSL bad peer certificate. Connection refused, replicating database at 08:06".
I don't know what could be the problem.
Thanks again,

Who knew you'd still have comments about a 2 year old posting :)
My team is testing the Google Apps, gmail service. So, essentially, I can send e-mails through the web-based gmail client from my work domain name. Google Apps doesn't provide any Lotus Notes instructions on how to get the email sent to my Lotus Application to the gmail client, which is how I found your blog.
I've followed the instructions and have some questions.
1. Which do I want, POP or IMAP, if I want to have all of my e-mails that come in and out to Lotus available on gmail?
2. Do you think the problem is that Lotus thinks (not that Lotus can think) it is incorrectly coordinating with itself because the domain names are the same?
3. Any last suggestion as to why I keep getting POP3 Protocol Errors? I have tried each of the suggestion above with no avail.
Any suggestion would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Hi Stephanie,
The answer to your problem is complex enough to warrant its own post. Keep an eye out for it on http://www.cratchit.org or subscribe to the RSS feed. I'll mull it over and have the post up late today or tomorrow.
Hi Dave Leigh and all
I was trying to configure LN, but i really dont understand why its not get connecting, i can send the mail but if i send it to my gmail only its passing through, other all mail...nothing, same time i can not recieve any mail also.

Thanks in Advance
