What's New?

This site was started on April 1st, 1998. Here's some of the work I've done on it since then.

  • I've got a new fax number.  It's on my vCard and my resume.

  • I've made several changes to Leveraging the Web... bringing it up to date and fixing broken links.

  • I'm removing some of the backgrounds and colors on the site... they look good, except on a monochrome LCD laptop I use occasionally, which has been donated to my mother.  I think that it's a good thing if I make sure my own mother can read the site.

My son William now has his own website.  He's got a great science project posted.

1999-02-15

Because I've been swamped for info on this topic, I've added a Year2000 page.

1998-12-13

I've recently added The Cratchit Project Home Page, an initiative to create a free open-source general accounting package for Linux.

1998-10-04

The site has moved!  I'm now on Mindspring.  I now have more space, my own domain (cratchit.org) and enough e-mail accounts for the whole family (not to mention as many accounts as I want to parse out of cratchit.)

1998-09-25

Added a Discussion Group and Mail Lists to Cratchit.

1998-09-10

Added the Search Page.  This is nothing special, just a test of a form submission page.

1998-09-02

Added the Cratchit Project Home Page.

1998-08-02

Added a Site Map and added some Pet Peeves.   Updated my Links and the Linux page (can you believe I've upgraded again?)  I also checked my site stats recently, and I was absolutely shocked to find that there are literally hundreds of hits that aren't mine...about 500! Who ARE you people?? E-mail me using the link at the top of the page, I'm terribly curious!

1998-07-26

Added link to James Gleick's website.

1998-07-21

Updated Project Management 101, added some new links to My Links, and updated my Linux page. I'd love to do more, but haven't had the time. Actually, there's plenty of time, but it's all taken up doing other things.

1998-06-14

Added the section "Leveraging the Web", and some numerous small changes, including links to the photos from the Linux Expo.

1998-06-01

I attended the 4th Annual Linux Expo in Durham, NC. Read about it here.

I've added Project Management 101, including a link from the index. It's a very quick overview of some of the basics of sponsored project development, and it's incomplete. I'll flesh it out, as usual, when I get the time.

I've changed my fax number on the resume. That's because the Linux machine is usually using the old number for an Internet connection. If you download my vCard you'll see that there is a fax number listed for work... that's the one to use, or use e-mail (vastly preferred).

I've been down for a few days, but Linux is now up and running on a larger machine (32 meg Pentium, which is more than sufficient). I've put Windows NT Workstation on the old machine... a necessity, since my profession involves programming for Windows. I've now got an 8-port ethernet hub here, and Linux will be hosting 3 other machines: the NT box, a smaller Linux box (for Internet access only), and a home-grown Web appliance (an old laptop running the DOS-based Arachne web browser). This should be fun. Since I'm doing this in my spare time, as well as trying to spend some quality time with three kids, don't hold your breath. However, things are progressing steadily.

1998-04-16

Working late at night, and used to DOS systems, I did the wrong thing... I turned off the power without shutting down first. And to top it off, my lack of familiarity A Linux caused me to blow the whole damned site and all of my changes with it. I just replaced what I'd lost, and frankly, I think I did it better the first time. Next order of business is to learn to recover my file system!!

1998-04-06

I finally edited and viewed this web site on Linux for the first time today. I'm using WPE to edit it at the moment (I'm hoping to get Visual SlickEdit), and Netscape Navigator 4 to view it. Fixed numerous small problems with formatting, mainly having to do with word-wrap around tables. It seems that MSIE3.0 doesn't word-wrap around a wide table, but Netscape does. It was my fault anyway for leaving the ALIGN clause in the tag.

1998-04-03

Filled in some details and explored the reasons for some of the formatting differences between MSIE 3.0 and Netscape 3.0 (Netscape isn't placing my graphic links at the bottom of the page as it should.)

1998-04-02

Completed the overall structure of the site and determined what was to be included, and put blank paged in their place. Although I hate it when I come across "under construction" pages, I put them in to speed my development. I'm writing this off-line anyway.

I changed my date formats to ISO/IEC 8824 form (yyyy-mm-dd). I also added the country code (+1) to all of my telephone numbers to accomodate some friends in distant lands.

Found a couple of links to the Web Interoperability Pledge and the Any Browser campaign, and included links to these at the bottom of my page.

I was so horrified at the HTML code produced by Internet Assistant for Microsoft Word that I manually reformatted all the pages using TextPad. I've also added it to my list of peeves.

1998-04-01

Began work on this site. I began with converting the resumé and with a VERY basic index page as well as this "what's new". I've decided to stick entirely with HTML for the web site. BTW, this is my twin sons' birthday! Michael and Timothy are 2 years old today.
